Resources for Researchers

Two very helpful manuals have been developed by the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean.

  1. Manual for editors of health science journals, available at; http://www.emro.who.int/emame/index.htm
  2. A practical guide for health researchers” (WHO Regional Publications Eastern Mediterranean Series 30) by MF Fathalla and MMF Fathalla, available at; athttp://whqlibdoc.who.int/emro/2004/9290213639.pdf .

This resource contains guidance on writing manuscripts for publication as well as guidance on other research-related activities.

The two manuals together provide a lot of solid practical advice that researchers can use to write better articles, and that editors can use to produce stronger journals.

History of Resuscitation

The first description of a successful resuscitation is recounted in the Bible, in the Book of Kings. A child of a Shunemite couple complained of a headache and died. The prophet Elisha prayed and then: “…placed himself over the child. He put his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands, as he bent over him. And the body of the child became warm. He stepped down, walked once up and down the room, then mounted and bent over him. Thereupon the boy sneezed seven times, and the boy opened his eyes”.

Hebrew midwife Puah is reported to have “breathed into the baby’s mouth to cause the baby to cry…”. Exodus 1:15-17

When necessary, a cannula of gold, silver or another suitable material is advanced down the throat to support inspiration.” AVICENNA (Abu Ali Al-Hussein Ibn Abdallah Ibn Sinna) 980-1037

Tossach’s feat

There are some facts, which in themselves are of so great importance to mankind, or which may lead to so useful discoveries, that it would seem to be the duty of everyone under whose notice they fall, to render them as extensively public as it is possible”. John Fothegill; 1745.

On Circulation…

…the one primary and essential object is to supply the brain with an oxygenated circulation. Artificial respiration can be maintained indefinitely with ease; the heart is rather readily started, but unless cerebral anemia be overcome in less than seven minutes the patient passes into the death that knows no awakening”. Crile, 1914.

Wake up Safe

Although great strides have been made in anesthesia safety, patients continue to experience unintended harm related to anesthesia and surgical care.  We don’t know precisely how often these events occur and we don’t know their causes. As these events are relatively rare today and a system to report and analyze these events does not exist. Wake up Safe is an initiative designed to fill these gaps in knowledge and to find ways to reduce or eliminate these harmful events.

The Initiative is organized by the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia, the largest professional group for Pediatric Anesthesiologists in the United States. It is a registry of serious adverse events reported on a voluntary basis by participating institutions. Names of individual providers and institutions will not be identified and are confidential.   Each institution reports the event and a structured analysis of why the event occurred.  From a review of the reports we hope to find ways to improve care of children in the perioperative environment.

Journal/Author Name Estimator

Have you recently written a paper, but you’re not sure to which journal you should submit it? Or maybe you want to find relevant articles to cite in your paper? Or are you an editor, and do you need to find reviewers for a particular paper? Jane can help!

Just enter the title and/or abstract of the paper in the box, and click on ‘Find journals’, ‘Find authors’ or ‘Find Articles’. Jane will then compare your document to millions of documents inMedline to find the best matching journals, authors or articles.

Instead of using a title or abstract, you can also search using a keyword search, similar to popular web search engines.

“Patients with long term medical conditions become the experts on living with those conditions, even if they aren’t necessarily the experts on the science of their treatment. They are also repeated users of the health care system and are an incredibly under-used resource in how that system actually works for, or sometimes against, them.”

A Tribute to Grass.

Grass doesn’t make a fuss. It doesn’t try to be beautiful or outstanding. It doesn’t want to attract attention. It is so humble that it even allows people to walk all over it. Yet it possesses such strength. It glows in healthy green despite being stepped all over.  When a typhoon strikes and all the flowers die and all the tall trees get uprooted, the humble grass survives.  I think a virtuous person should be like grass. Humble, unnoticed, yet possessing great strength and kindness.
