Head & neck surgery considerations

Pictures & Text: Professor Naeem Khan Pediatric Surgeon KRL General Hopital, Islamabad

The pictures on this page show a huge neuro fibromatous lesion on the face of a young patient. It was a part of generalised neaurofibromatosis of whole of the body. Patients acquiring head and neck surgery require close cooperation and facilitation between surgical and anaesthesia teams.

Pearl # 1: Placement of endotracheal tube should be as far away as possible from the operating field and surgeons should take special care to avoid dislodgment and detachment of anaesthetic circuits.

Pearl # 2: Double toweling and proper positioning of patients head and neck will facilitate exclusion of surgical and anaesthesia fields.
